Things to Do in Phang Nga: 10 Best Experiences (2026)

Phang Nga province is one of Thailand’s most scenically dramatic regions — a landscape of mangrove forests, limestone karst islands, and hidden sea caves carved by the Andaman over millions of years. The provincial capital is quiet and rarely visited, but Phang Nga Bay and the coastal district around Khao Lak contain some of the finest natural experiences in southern Thailand. Here is what to do.

1. Phang Nga Bay Tour (James Bond Island)

Ao Phang Nga National Park is the headline attraction — 400 sq km of island-studded bay, best known for Koh Tapu (James Bond Island) but far richer than that single landmark. The tour moves by longtail boat through mangrove channels, sea caves, and stilted fishing villages. The UNESCO-listed landscape is extraordinary at any time of day but especially in morning light.

2. Hong Island & Phang Nga Bay 3-Island Tour

Koh Hong (“Room Island”) contains a hidden inland lagoon accessible only at low tide through a cave entrance — one of Thailand’s great secret places. The 3-island tour combines Hong with Lawa Island and a sea-cave kayak.

3. Sunset Serenity Cruise

A smaller, slower alternative to the standard bay tour: an evening cruise through Phang Nga Bay by traditional wooden boat, watching the karst silhouettes turn orange and pink at dusk. A good option for couples or anyone who has already done the daytime bay circuit.

4. Takua Pa Old Town

Takua Pa is the oldest trading settlement in Phang Nga province — evidence of occupation dates to the 6th century. The preserved Sino-Portuguese shophouse quarter along the river is photogenic and peaceful, with good local coffee and a handful of small museums. Often combined with the Little Amazon river trip.

5. Khao Lak Beaches

Phang Nga’s coastline north of Phuket is lined with low-key beaches: Nang Thong and Bang Niang in the Khao Lak resort strip, Pakarang and Natai further south toward Phuket. The water is gentle and clear Nov–Apr; the beaches are never crowded.

6. Three Temples Cultural Tour

A full-day cultural circuit through Phang Nga’s temple highlights, including the Monkey Cave temple (Wat Suwan Khuha), the Chinese Shrine of Light, and Wat Tham Suwankuha. An unhurried counterpoint to the bay and island tours.

7. Sea Kayaking Through Sea Caves

The sea caves and hongs (inland lagoons) of Phang Nga Bay are most intimately explored by kayak at the right tide. Many Phang Nga Bay tour operators include a guided sea-cave kayak segment; if not, it can be booked separately from Khao Lak.

8. Similan Islands Day Trip

Technically Phang Nga province, the Similan Islands sit 84 km offshore and are accessible by speedboat from Tab Lamu pier near Khao Lak. Nine granite-and-coral islands with visibility sometimes exceeding 30 metres. The park opens November 1 and closes April 30 each year.

9. Bang Niang Night Market

Phang Nga’s best street market, held three evenings a week in Bang Niang village. Local vendors sell grilled seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice, and the full cast of Thai street-food classics. Unpretentious, excellent, and ฿200 buys you an outstanding meal.

10. Khao Sok National Park

The eastern half of Phang Nga province butts up against Khao Sok National Park (technically Surat Thani, but the primary access road runs through Phang Nga). From Khao Lak, the park is 1.5 hours by road — a manageable day trip or a natural overnight add-on to any Phang Nga itinerary.

Getting Around Phang Nga

Phang Nga has no public transport worth using for tourists. The practical options are a hired vehicle with driver, a private day-tour (the most cost-effective if you combine 2–3 attractions), or a private transfer from Khao Lak or Phuket Airport.

Arriving by air? Transfer via Phuket Airport.

Phuket International Airport is the closest hub to Phang Nga. Private transfers north to Khao Lak start from ฿1,800 and take 90 minutes.
