Phuket Airport (HKT) is the main arrival point for most visitors to Khao Lak. The two destinations are roughly 80 km apart on Highway 4. Here are your realistic options.

Option 1: Private transfer (recommended)

A private air-conditioned minivan or car from the airport to your Khao Lak hotel typically takes 60–75 minutes depending on traffic and your hotel’s exact location in Khao Lak. There are no stops, no waiting for other passengers, and the driver meets you in arrivals. This is the easiest option with luggage or a group.

KLLD operates a Khao Lak to Phuket Airport transfer at ฿1,800 per vehicle (not per person) for most Khao Lak zone hotels. The same service runs in reverse for departure day.

Option 2: Shared minivan / shuttle

Several operators run shared shuttle minivans between HKT and Khao Lak, usually departing on fixed schedules or when full. Expect a journey time of 90 minutes to 2 hours due to multiple hotel drop-offs. Cost is typically ฿200–350 per person. Not ideal if you have an early morning tour the next day — you do not control arrival time.

Option 3: Public bus via Takua Pa

The cheapest route: airport bus to Phuket Bus Terminal 2, then an inter-provincial bus north to Takua Pa, then a songthaew or motorbike taxi the last stretch to Khao Lak. Total journey: 3–4 hours at roughly ฿100–150. Not practical with large bags, not reliable for tight schedules, and requires some Thai or route knowledge. Fine for budget solo travellers with time to spare.

Journey time and distance

HKT to central Khao Lak (Bang Niang / Khuk Khak area) is approximately 78–85 km. Highway 4 is the direct route north. Peak traffic around Phuket town can add 15–20 minutes in high season.

Which to choose

For most visitors, the private transfer wins on convenience, especially after a long-haul flight. Split between two or three people, the per-head cost is comparable to a shuttle.
