Three days in Khao Lak is enough to hit the three headline experiences: the Similan Islands, Phang Nga Bay, and Khao Sok National Park. Here is how to sequence them.

Day 1: Similan Islands snorkeling

Start with the furthest-out and most weather-dependent trip while your energy is fresh. The boat leaves from Thap Lamu pier early morning and returns by late afternoon. The crossing takes 60–90 minutes each way; on the islands you will have two or three snorkel stops, beach time, and lunch. Underwater visibility often exceeds 20 metres — the best snorkeling in Thailand. Book the Similan Islands snorkeling day trip in advance; the park limits daily visitor numbers.

Day 2: James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is Khao Lak’s home bay — a UNESCO-listed stretch of limestone karst islands, sea caves and the iconic needle rock of Koh Tapu (James Bond Island). The James Bond Island tour combines the rock itself with a longtail boat cruise through the mangroves, sea cave kayaking, and a stop at Koh Panyee — the floating Muslim fishing village. A gentler day than the Similans, with no open-sea crossing; good for any weather.

Day 3: Khao Sok National Park

Round out the trip inland. The Khao Sok day trip combines an elephant encounter, canoeing on the Sok River, a stop at the Takua Pa morning market, and lunch at the Rock and Treehouse Resort — an easy, low-impact day suitable for all ages. If Cheow Lan Lake is a priority, swap it for the Cheow Lan Lake day trip for the full limestone-cliff-and-emerald-water experience.

Getting around Khao Lak

All three tours include hotel pickup from the Khao Lak area. For getting to Khao Lak from Phuket Airport, a private transfer from HKT takes about one hour and is the most convenient option with luggage.

If you have more time

A fourth day pairs well with the Surin Islands (quieter than Similan, with a Moken sea-gypsy village) or a Phi Phi Islands day trip (Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon). See our Phi Phi vs Similan comparison if you are deciding between the two snorkel options.
