The herd includes elephants rescued from logging operations and urban begging — animals that arrived underweight or carrying injuries. An adult elephant consumes 150–200 kg of food each day. Elephant Bathing: What the River Session Is Really Like

The elephant bathing session runs about forty minutes, in a shaded stretch of river shallow enough to stand in. You wade in beside the mahout, scoop water over the elephant's back with a plastic bowl, and scrub behind the ears where the skin is thin and the mud sticks. The elephants come to the water because they want to — nobody drives them in, and a bath ends when the elephant decides it is over.

Bathing an elephant is less serene than the photographs suggest. They roll, they blow water through their trunks, and a five-tonne animal shifting its weight makes waves. Expect to be soaked to the shoulders. Guests who would rather stay dry can feed bananas and sugarcane from the bank and still be within arm's reach.

Sessions run in the morning, before the day heats up and while the elephants are most active. Rain rarely cancels anything — the elephants are unbothered by it, and a wet-season bath is often the best one of the year.

How to Choose Between Khao Lak's Elephant Camps

Khao Lak has several elephant camps and they are not equivalent. Before you book anywhere — with us or not — check four things.

• No riding, ever. Saddles damage an elephant's spine, and a camp that offers bareback-only rides is still offering riding.
• No bullhooks or chains during guest interaction, and no chaining at rest beyond a short safety tether.
• Small groups. Ask how many guests share one elephant. Above six and it stops being an encounter.
• Where the money goes. An adult Asian elephant eats 150–200 kg of vegetation a day; food, habitat and mahout wages are the largest costs a camp carries. A camp that cannot tell you its costs probably is not covering them.
