Phang Nga Programm 2

Was über 1-1,5h schon ganz schön nervt.

Khao Sok canoeing and elephant trek

We booked the full day Khao Sok safari with canoeing and elephant trekking via a combination of telephone and email the day before the tour. The day started off on a not so great note with a fax underneath our hotel door changing our pickup time 20 minutes earlier than we had been told the day before. It left us a bit rushed as we had not been expecting this but we were ready on time for pickup. Our guide was good and conducted the tour in both French and English for the 11 of us on the tour. The driver was safe and we were picked up in a very nice mini van with working seat belts. The first stop was a food market. We could have done without this as it's very similar to other outdoor markets in SE Asia. I guess it would be a good stop if you've never been to one before. We went on the canoe trip first. We absolutely loved it. You just had to sit back and relax while the paddlers did all the work. They were a very friendly bunch and spoke a little English, stopping and pointing out snakes and birds we otherwise wouldn't have noticed. One of the paddler guides made a sort of bamboo whistle for the kids in his canoe which was a big hit as you can imagine. The company provided life jackets if you wanted but the river was low and not very fast in most places so you really didn't need them. The sky looked perfectly clear as we set off, however, it started to rain about 5 minutes after we started and hadn't bothered to get ponchos from our guide. Our butts would still have been sitting on the wet bottom of the inflatable canoe so ponchos wouldn't have helped anyway. Didn't matter we still loved it so quiet and peaceful... They suggest bringing an extra shirt but I would suggest also bringing an extra pair of shorts, or bathing suit bottoms or wear quick drying shorts. We never did fully dry off for the rest of the day. Lunch was a buffet at the Khao Sok Rock and Treetops restaurant. They had non fish options for my allergic daughter. The food was good but not enough for my very hungry husband. The elephant trekking came next and was the absolute highlight of our vacation for my 10 year old daughter. Three of us on one elephant was a tight squeeze so my husband got to ride on the elephant's neck/head. They said my daughter was too young to do it and we were OK with their decision. There was another girl in our group who looked about 13 years old and she was allowed. Just mentioning this so you can manage your expectations. At the end we bought bananas for 50baht to feed the elephants. There was instant coffee and tea available before the trip back to the hotel. Our mahout was great and made a grasshopper sitting on a branch out of foliage he picked up along the trek for our daughter.. how sweet. In between the canoeing and lunch we made a short trip to a rural temple filled with hungry monkeys. Our guide had picked some small leafy branches so that we had something to feed the monkeys. You just need to hold the food low and let them have it otherwise they will literally jump on you to get the food.. The kids in our group got a bit of a scare from this..wish the guide had warned us better in that regard. Overall a really enjoyable trip and would recommend it.
