Khao Sok day trip

From the moment we were picked up, we felt very at ease. The tour guide Kim was absolutely amazing. We had a small group of 4 and Kim was speaking between English, French and Thai all day. Her English was exceptional, very fluent. We were collected at our hotel right on time at 8.15. Upon pick up Kim explained the activities of the day and the itinerary so we knew exactly what to expect. She was extremely knowledgeable about the Thai history and landmarks as we made our way into Khao Sok. First stop was the morning markets. Was definitely an experience. So much fresh seafood and fruit/veg. Lots of items we couldn’t even identify! Was a short visit, about 20 minutes, but it was all we needed to look through the food stalls. Upon returning to the bus we were offered cold water from the esky which was much appreciated. Kim has purchased some unusual food items at the market for us to try. We were then given the opportunity to try local fruit, deserts and the unusual century egg in the bus that Kim has selected. Before long we arrived at the viewpoint. It was a lovely sight, great for photos. Once again Kim explained about the history of the formation of the landscape and the surrounding flora and fauna pointing out some unusual plants to us. Then we were off again to Khao Sok. We arrived a short time later at the river for our canoeing experience. We were provided with the essentials to keep us dry with raincoats and a waterproof bag. Once again Kim explained everything and gave us tips for along the way. Our canoeing guide was amazing. He pointed out a lot of wildlife and took the time to stop and show us. We saw snakes, monkeys, fish, frogs, and birds along the way. It really was a great experience. The highlight of the trip. We stopped half way down the river for coffee which was supplied in a bamboo cup and boiled through bamboo. At the end of the canoe trip we were given an opportunity to purchase photographs however this was not pushed on us. Photos were 250 baht. Once again we were offered cold drinks and refresher towels. We then went to the treehouse resort where we were spoilt with an array of Thai cuisine for lunch. The food was fresh and very tasty. A bottle of soft drink was also provided. After lunch we were off to Win Park elephant conservation park for our elephant ride. We stopped off at the monkey park on the way and saw lots of monkeys playing. They were quite tame and came up to us looking for food. We didn’t feed them because we didn’t want to be jumped on! Lots of good photo opportunities. On the way Kim gave us a lot of valuable information regarding the elephant laws in Thailand. It was really interesting. Hot tip - even if it is sunny, take a raincoat on the trek! We should have listened to Kim because about halfway through our trek it started pouring rain! It didn’t seem to worry anyone though because we were all having such a great time. The trek took about 45 mins and we went through small streams, jungle and rocky areas. The elephants seemed really well cared for and were very well trained. After the trek, we were given the opportunity to feed our elephant some fruit for 50 baht. Once again our driver offered us cold drinks and tea and coffee after the trek. Then it was time to head back to Khao Lak. Kim gave us more information about things like the tsunami, Thai police, driving laws, Thai trades etc. She was so knowledgeable! The driver stopped off for a few moments so we could see the tsunami mass cemetery. We were back to our hotel by 4pm. All in all we had an excellent experience which we really think was largely due to Kim. She was absolutely amazing. Our driver was very friendly too. Was a long day but it didn’t feel as though it dragged at all. We had so much fun and enjoyed some experiences we would never get anywhere else. One thing I would suggest is to make sure you bring a waterproof bag, bug spray and sunscreen. And a camera for lots of photos!! We had a good time going through all our happy snaps when we got home. Definitely recommended!! Thanks Kim!
