Thailand jungle in a day!

We had a fantastic day in Khao Sok National Park. The scenery is breathtaking. We firstly went to the tsunami memorial which wasn't brilliant but the guide gave a good run down of what had happened at that place and it was very moving and sad. Then elephant trekking in the jungle - couldn't fault it, a fan traditional Thai lunch followed by an afternoon kayaking down the Sok river with some amazing photo opportunities. Finally we visited the monkey temple - careful though, they're not as cute as they look. They are wild and can be viscious. Would advise against feeding them. The tour guides were very good and knowledgeble and we would definitely use them again.

Change of scenery

So on my last day in Phuket, I was alone and wanted something to do, and my hostel offered a discount on the jungle trek. I was skeptical about doing this in the beginning as Asia isn't known for its care of animals. But I did it anyway. The drive to the actually nature park is about 2 hours out and takes you off the island of Phuket and into the most southern part of Thailand. We started with a visit to a tsunami memorial site and they even showed us pictures of how the area looked when it happened. Then we went off to the elephant camp. The elephants looked relatively healthy and content. We rode on them for about an hour into the jungle and crossing a river at one point. Then we stopped at a monkey temple and seen some monkeys. Next we had an amazing lunch. Then off it was to a river canoe, which I though, but they then dropped off the family groups with the canoes and took us adventure looking types down further to bamboo canoes. I was quite impressed with this and it was definitely the highlight of the day. We stopped along the river and were given tea in a bamboo cup that we could even keep as souvenirs. Turned out to be a good day in the jungle.

Half Day Elepehant Trek

We went on the half day elephant trek with Khao Lak Land Discovery tours in November 2014 and I cannot recommend it enough. We initially had to call the tour to ask to move our trip to another day (my boyfriend was in bed with food poisoning all morning - stay away from fried chicken) and a man (who spoke very good English) said it was no problem to change dates. Good start. We were actually staying in Patong, Phuket and so had to pay 3500 baht (around £70) extra to include transfers (which is reasonably priced - it was around a 1.5/2hr drive to Khao Lak). On the morning on the trip our driver arrived on time in a pleasantly air contioned mini bus and began the drive to Khao Lak. When we arrived at the tour office everyone seemed to go out of their way to ensure we had the most enjoyable trip possible after hearing we had travelled quite a way for it. Our tour guide was incredible, her name was Nuut/Noot (forgive me for the spelling) and she was brilliant. In the office she told us about the most playful elephant at the camp and promised she would try to arrange for us to ride her as we had travelled up to Khao Lak. We then got back in the taxi to pick up the other parties. As we had a short wait inbetween picking up a few other people, Nuut asked the driver to stop at a local Buddhist temple/monastery, which was a lovely time-filler for us! We then eventually got to the elephant camp which was just amazing. I was a little worried about the treatments of the elephants in these places (which is why we chose to travel to Khao Lak rather than the camps in Phuket) but to me at least, the elephants looked like they were well taken care of, and it seemed the elephants and their mahouts (keepers) genuinely had a lovely relationship. True to Nuut's word, me and my boyfriend got to ride on the youngest most playful elephant - Booy (again, spelling). It was amazing, after a few minutes the mahout jumped down and offered me to slide down onto the elephants head - which I of course did! He then took our camera and took 20 or so photos of us on the elephant. We went on a short trek (20 mins or so?) before arriving at the lake. This really was the highlight of our day, swimming and playing in the water with these beautiful elephants was a one-of-a-kind experience! Nuut had our camera ready snapping away taking wonderful photos of the whole thing! Perfect! After a short swim and some more photo ops, we trekked back to the elephant base camp where we could feed the elephants bananas, had some snacks, and if you would like to there was the option to buy extra photos. We also used this as an opportunity to tip our mahout (quite generously, but I really enjoyed the trek and was delighted to see the treatment of the elephants.) Now, I thought this was where the trip ended but I was wrong! We then jumped back in the minibus and took a short drive to a beautiful waterfall where we ate lunch and went for a swim - we loved it, it was a brilliant surprise and really added to the day. We then made one last stop at the Tsunami memorial (at the request of someone in our group) which really was amazing. The whole day was brilliant and I cannot recommend it enough, Nuut our guide was absolutely amazing and I would do the whole thing again if I could! Thank you Khao Lak Land Discovery!!
