Khao Lak Nature Discovery (Bamboo Raft & Elephant Trek)

We went on the Nature Discovery tour this week which included return hotel pick up, Bamboo Rafting through a jungle river, a visit to the Sea Turtle Conservation Park at the Naval Base, Small Sandy Beach, visit to a small waterfall where we also had lunch and then an elephant trek.As it is wet season, it did rain on and off throughout the day but our awesome Tour guide Eric provided some waterproof jackets for the day. He translated in both German and English - his English was easy to understand. We were picked up at 8:20am on the dot in an air conditioned mini van. It was a full bus, two other couples and a grandad with his 2 grandchildren.Bamboo raft was just amazing. Make sure you wear bathers & thongs or clothes and shoes you're willing to get dirty. You will get pretty wet from waist down but it is amazing. I am petrified of snakes but we were told we would be able to see monkeys, snakes and other animals. 100THB ($4 AUS) tip for the person steering your raft is respectful and appreciated. They also take photos of you and you are able to buy them for 250THB.Sea Turtle Conservation Park was OK. The turtles were cute but personally felt it was time wasted as once you see a few of the big turtle 'pools' there's not much else to do.The hike to Small Sandy beach is through a steep-ish jungle/forest. Once again, nothing too flash about the beach in wet season. Sneakers would've been good for this walk. Its approx 300-400m but with bad knees and ankles + wearing thongs it was a bit of a struggle.I personally didn't see much as the waterfall as my ankle couldn't handle the stairs to get down and back up again but from what I heard it was okay. Depending on the weather sometimes the fish are in there to eat the dead skin on your feet but they don't like the rain.Lunch was included in the tour price and was had at a homestyle restaurant next to the waterfall. We had a variety of dishes including masaman curry, a vegetable dish, crumbed chicken and a soup. All tasted lovely. The elephant trek was great. As it was wet the ground was muddy which elephants don't like. It was around 45-60 mins. Lots of stopping for the elephants toilet stops along the way. The workers are more than happy to take photos of you on your phone or camera. We found them very giggly and happy. Elephants seem healthy and happy. You can pay 100THB for a basket of bananas to feed them after which is also amazing. Once again a 100THB tip for your elephant rider is respectful and appreciated. We purchased the photo in a frame made out of the elephant dung for a souvenir/keepsake. 250THB and I love it. Though I was curious about getting it through customs and bringing back into Australia. I'm still curious about it as we don't leave until the 22nd. Fingers crossed, otherwise will just keep photo.Overall it was definitely worth the cost of the trip. Very good value for money and a very active & tiring day. Approx 8am-5pm. 100% recommend.

Good tour

We went on a full day tour which included bamboo rafting/visit to turtle conservation centre/visit to waterfall/lunch & elephant trek.Bamboo rafting: highlight of the tour. Very safe as water in most parts is only ankle deep. Got a wet butt sitting on the raft, but all part of the experienceTurtle conservation centre: I was really looking forward to this but was a little disappointed. Turtles in tanks swimming around. No one from the centre to explain what happens to the turtles etc which would have been informative.Waterfall: just a small waterfall....nothing to get excited overLunch: Nice homemade Thai lunch served in local home style restaurant, followed by fresh fruit & coffeeElephant trek: a little disappointed. Our one hour trek was more like half an hour with LOTS of stops. The guides were more than happy to take photos on your cameras as you went along however there were no professional photographers there to capture any photos for you (as there was on the rafting). Also no run down at the end of how long the elephants have been there or what they feed on daily etc....might have been nice to have had some commentary about the park/elephants.Overall it was a good experience..... Our driver was good & the English speaking guide was fairly easy to understand.

Elephant Bath

Our tour for the Elephant Bath of 2 adults and 2 kids didn't start off great with the driver picking us up 30 mins late. He then picked up someone about 5 mins drive up the road who after about 10 mins drive we found out was our tour guide. He then told us it was about 30-40 mins to get there. it took another hour. there wasn't much communication on the way there but plenty on the way back. It was just nice to see the scenery. Once there the Elephant camp seemed nice but because we were late the mahouts were waiting so we were rushed straight onto the elephants. So no real initial interaction. The walk up around the hill was ok at best. You have to pay 100thb for bananas half way up and once finished 250 thb for photos if you want them. The bathing with the elephants was the best part. Afterwards we were taken to a not so big waterfall and had lunch next door at a small restaurant which was nice.Overall the Elephants do not look happy and I wouldn't do this again.
