Khao Lak Safari review
We just got back from an amazing day with Volker, our tour guide! There were 10 on the tour in total which didn’t feel too many at any stage and the tour was given in English and German to accommodate everyone’s needs. We firstly visited the turtle sanctuary- one of the highlights of the day - getting to see turtles at different stages of development (a few weeks to a few months) before they’re released to the sea. Also some very large older turtles who were there for treatment! Next we went to a small waterfall which was very pleasant. Then we went to the highlight (for me) which was the river raft. This was so relaxing and completely different to anything we’d done before. Definitely opt in to swim as it’s great fun and there’s a swing you can use to throw yourself into the water with. The main guy took photos from the bank and sold them later for 300bht, which we thought was very reasonable as a ‘thank you’ for a great journey. One of the pairs even asked to captain the raft which was fun to watch!Next we went to the temple where Volker’s incredible knowledge of Thailand and Buddhism shone! It was truly enlightening!!Then we went to the elephant bathing which was my partner’s favourite part of the day. This was great fun and it was incredible being so close to such majestic animals. We were keen not to ride them as we weren’t sure on how humanely they’re kept. In the back of my mind I still question how ethical it all is but Volker said they use elephants in the wood trade for moving heavy timber... so I suppose without the tourists the elephants would be doing that - it’s the lesser of two evils for sure! Again, they take photos for you to purchase for 250bht and you can buy bananas for 100bht to feed the elephants after.Lunch at the elephant centre was great (if not a little late in the day!) although the taxi driver and Volker were treated to more authentic Thai food whilst the rest of us enjoyed very tasty non-spicy delights. I would’ve loved the opportunity to have requested the authentic food as my partner and I both feel we’ve not really been exposed to true Thai food whilst on holiday here (our friend is Thai so we’re used to some pretty spicy food from her!!).Finally we went to the Tsunami memorial. This was a poignant visit as it highlighted the devastation from 2014.The tour was excellently organised (we even received a note from our hotel advising us the pickup time had changed, even though it was only by 5minutes!!!!). We left our hotel around 8am, returning at 5pm.The office staff are super helpful - we booked it online and altered the date after everything was confirmed without any difficulties. Our questions were replied to very quickly by email which was very reassuring. All in all this trip had the perfect itinerary. We got to do lots of different activities whilst only using up one of our days in Thailand!! Recommended to all ages!
