If you’re planning a trip, here is exactly how to get there, how long it takes, and the one thing that catches most visitors out.

Khao Lak is the nearest gateway

Day trips to the Similans leave from Thap Lamu pier, just south of Khao Lak town. From the pier it’s a roughly 60–90 minute speedboat crossing out to the islands. Because Khao Lak sits closer to the pier than Phuket or Krabi, you get a shorter transfer, an earlier start, and more time in the water — which is why most Similan day trips are run out of Khao Lak in the first place.

Coming from Phuket? Expect an extra 60–90 minutes of road transfer up to the pier each way. Many Phuket operators simply drive their guests to Khao Lak’s pier anyway — so basing yourself here removes the longest, least pleasant part of the day.

The catch: the park is only open about half the year

Mu Ko Similan National Park is open roughly mid-October to mid-May and closed for the southwest monsoon. Outside those months there are no day trips at all. The clearest water — often 20–30 m visibility — falls in February to April. For a fuller breakdown see our guide to the best time to visit the Similan Islands.

Day trip or liveaboard?

For most visitors staying on the coast, a day trip is the right call — a speedboat from Thap Lamu, two or three snorkel stops, lunch on one of the islands, and back the same evening. Liveaboards suit certified divers chasing the remote northern dive sites over several days. If you’re deciding between the Similans and their quieter northern neighbour, our Similan vs Surin comparison lays out the difference.

The easy way: a guided day trip with hotel pickup

The simplest option is to let a local operator handle the pier transfer, park fees, boat and guide. Our Similan Islands snorkeling day trip includes hotel pickup from anywhere in Khao Lak, so you don’t need to find your own way to the pier — door to powder-sand beach and back, in one day.

The Similan Islands are the headline snorkeling and diving destination of the Andaman coast — and Khao Lak is the closest mainland base to reach them.
